Cristiano Ronaldo has scored again in his first game for Manchester United just days after the death of his newborn son.

However, the Portuguese star was unable to prevent the record English champions' defeat at Arsenal.

United lost 3-1 (2-1) in London on Saturday and suffered another setback in the Premier League in the fight for a Champions League spot.

Ronaldo narrowed the gap in the 34th minute after Nuno Tavares (3') and Bukayo Saka (32') gave Arsenal a 2-0 lead.

Granit Xhaka (70th) made the decision.

United's Bruno Fernandes (57th) had previously put a hand penalty on the post.

Manchester are now six points adrift of fourth-placed Arsenal and have played a game more.

Ronaldo was applauded by the hosts' fans at the game.

The 37-year-old mourns the loss of their son with his partner Georgina Rodriguez.

The wording in a statement Monday suggested he did not survive a twin birth.

Ronaldo and his family had experienced tremendous sympathy and support around the world.

Ronaldo was absent from Tuesday's game at Liverpool (0:4).

Nevertheless, in the seventh minute of the game at Anfield, the Liverpool fans applauded along with United supporters for around 60 seconds and sang the anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone".

Arsenal fans also applauded Ronaldo in the seventh minute.

"Great gesture from the Arsenal supporters, with applause for Cristiano in the seventh minute," Manchester United tweeted during the game.

The gesture alludes to the fact that the star has worn number seven in club and national team for years.
