The brave Tifosi waved their Ferrari flags, but Max Verstappen caused the next heavy setback at the atmospheric red festival.

After taking pole, the Dutch world champion also secured first place in the first sprint race of this Formula 1 season on Saturday.

After Charles Leclerc passed Ferrari right at the start to the cheers of the Italian supporters in the Autodromo Enzo e Dino, the 24-year-old Red Bull star overtook the same-aged Monegasque world championship leader again in the third to last of the 21 laps.

“In the end we were better on the tires.

It was fast, I put a lot of pressure on," said Verstappen.

He will now also start from first place this Sunday (3 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for Formula 1, on Sky and RTL) in the Grand Prix of Emilia Romagna - with Leclerc next to him.

"We will work and come back strong," he predicted.

Second place was not the Ferrari plan after two wins of the season for the Monegasque and a clear lead in the world championship.

Teammate Carlos Sainz, after his departure the day before, only managed fourth place in qualifying and tenth on the grid - one place behind Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull .

Mick Schumacher missed the points by two places.

This year there are points up to eighth place, the German Haas driver was tenth.

But he left a number of titles and names behind: compatriot and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel was 13th in the Aston Martin, record world champion Lewis Hamilton 14th in the Mercedes.

The debacle continued after a completely unsuccessful qualification in the sprint race for the German factory team, which was once so spoiled by success: George Russell did not get past eleventh place.

Mercedes can currently only look at what is happening at the top with envy and suffering, where Leclerc caused cheers from Ferrari fans right at the start when he overtook Verstappen.

The Monegasque accelerated to 200 km/h in 4.87 seconds and passed the Dutchman, who then spoke of a “really bad” start.

Leclerc didn't have a free ride at first.

After the cars of China's Guanyu Zhou (Alfa Romeo) and France's Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri) touched, Zhou's car ended up in the barriers.

The safety car had to go and led the field.

On the fifth lap, Bernd Mayländer steered the car back into the pit lane and Leclerc initially defended his lead.

In contrast to the race, the drivers in the sprint, which will still be held this year in Spielberg and Sao Paulo, do not have to come into the pits for the mandatory tire change, which limits their tactical options.

But Sainz made up a lot of places, as did Perez.

However, after missing the third qualifying run of both cars for the first time since the 2012 race in Japan, Hamilton and Russell both failed to advance, with Verstappen stalking Leclerc and passing on the third to last lap.

Leclerc continues to lead in the World Championship standings, he has 78 points, team-mate Sainz (38) pushed Russell (37) into second place.

They are followed by the Red Bull duo with Perez (36) and Verstappen (33) in fourth and fifth place.
