Angelique Kerber was eliminated in the first round of the tennis tournament in Stuttgart.

The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner lost to the favorite Estonian Anett Kontaveit on Wednesday after winning the first set 6: 3, 4: 6, 4: 6.

For Kerber it was the fifth defeat in the sixth game against the sixth in the world rankings.

The early end at the high-class tournament in Stuttgart is the next disappointment for the 34-year-old from Kiel.

Last weekend, the German number one lost both singles in the defeat of the German women's selection in the Billie Jean King Cup in Kazakhstan.

Lys has fun despite defeat

Before Kerber, the qualifier Eva Lys had already failed on Wednesday.

In the biggest match of her young tennis career so far, she lost 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16 against the Polish world number one, Iga Swiatek.

The pace of the in-form Pole was too high.

“It was definitely a very tough match.

Her intensity blew me away from the first second," Lys summed up: "It was unbelievable to be able to compete with such a player.

I've had moments where I've been able to assert my tennis, which gives you a lot of confidence.

I tried to use every second to learn from it.

It was really a lot of fun.”

On Tuesday, the German champion from the Hamburg club on the Alster impressed in her first WTA main draw match.

In three contested sets, Lys beat the world number 38 after a good three hours.

Viktorija Golubic claims.

Born in Kyiv, Lys is currently only 342 in the world rankings, but will improve significantly.

The talent had received a wild card for the qualification for the high-class Stuttgart indoor sand court tournament.

"The dream continues for me simply because it's been an incredible week for me.

The week will bring me a lot further.

I don't want to end this week."

Swiatek, also only 20 years old, is entering a tournament for the first time as the world number one.

Due to the resignation of Australian Ashleigh Barty, Swiatek took over the top position at the beginning of April.

The tournament is endowed with 611,210 euros.
