Russian players and Belarusians were barred from the 2022 edition of Wimbledon on Wednesday in response to the invasion of Ukraine, the management of the London tournament announced.

This news is a blow for the players, Daniil Medvedev in the lead.

The Moscow native is the current second player in the world in the ATP rankings.

The Russians and Belarusians, led by Daniil Medvedev, were excluded from the 2022 edition of Wimbledon on Wednesday in response to the invasion of Ukraine, the management of the London tournament announced.

"In the circumstances of unjustified and unprecedented military aggression, it would be unacceptable for the Russian regime to derive any benefit from the participation of Russian or Belarusian players," the All England Lawn Tennis Club said in a statement released Wednesday.

"We therefore intend, with deep regret, to reject the registration of Russian and Belarusian players at Wimbledon."
