Dylan Teuns surprisingly won the cycling classic Flèche Wallonne.

The Belgian was the strongest rider on Wednesday after 202 kilometers on the up to 25 percent steep final climb in Huy and relegated the five-time Flèche winner Alejandro Valverde from Spain to second place.

Third was the Russian Alexander Wlassow from the German team Bora-hansgrohe.

Teuns started about 300 meters from the finish line and left the top favorites Tadej Pogacar and Julian Alaphilippe behind.

Valverde, as the last pursuer, ran out of strength 200 meters later.

In the women's race, Liane Lippert started the dreaded final climb in a good position.

But the legs of the third in the Amstel Gold Race were not good enough for a podium finish.

Like at the Amstel a week and a half ago, the Italian Marta Cavalli secured victory ahead of the Dutch duo Annemiek van Vleuten and Demi Vollering.

Previously, the now retired Dutchwoman Anna van der Breggen had won the race seven times in a row.
