Auction kicks off in London to sell Maradona's 1986 World Cup shirt

An auction was launched in London today to sell the shirt worn by Argentine football legend Diego Maradona in his country's match against England in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Mexico in 1986. The shirt may sell for about six million pounds (7.9 million dollars).

The auction house (Sotheby's) put the value of the shirt before the electronic auction, which began today, Wednesday, and will continue until the fourth of next May.

Maradona scored Argentina's two goals in the legendary match, to lead his country to the World Cup semi-finals, after its 2-1 victory over England.

The fans of the round witch still remember Maradona's two goals to this day, as the first goal came with his hand against the English goalkeeper Peter Shilton, while the second "fabulous" goal was scored by an individual effort, after he ran the ball for a distance of 50 meters, evading more than one player in the England team in a wonderful way.

Argentina continued their career in the tournament successfully, winning the title for the second time in its history, after beating West Germany 3/2 in the final match.

Maradona, who died at the age of 60 of a heart attack in November 2020, replaced his shirt with that of England's Steve Hodge, and the number 10 shirt was displayed at the National Football Museum of England in Manchester before Hodge decided to sell it.
