Former Colombian footballer Freddy Rincon has died. The former national team captain and former Real Madrid and SSC Napoli player died on Wednesday in Cali, southwestern Colombia, from serious head injuries sustained in a traffic accident.

This was reported by the treating physicians.

"Despite the best efforts of our medical and nursing team, the patient Freddy Eusebio Rincon Valencia died today," said a statement from Clinica Imbanaco in Cali.

The 55-year-old Rincon was hospitalized in critical condition after a collision on Monday and underwent surgery for almost three hours.

There had previously been a violent collision between a bus and a van in which he was traveling.

The exact cause of the accident is not yet clear.

Rincon was known as "Colossus" during his playing days.

The former offensive player was one of the stars of the Colombian national team, which met eventual world champions Germany in the group stage at the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

With his goal in added time, Rincon made it 1-1 in a duel with the DFB selection.
