Bob pilot Mariama Jamanka has drawn a line under her sporting career.

The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic champion and Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics silver medalist announced her retirement on Wednesday.

“During my career as an athlete, I had many great moments and was able to celebrate great sporting successes.

However, now I've seen the time for me to end my career and I'm glad that I can do this after an Olympic silver medal," said the 31-year-old from the Bob Racing Club Thuringia.

She will now begin her studies in her native Berlin.

"She had to fight a lot"

"With Mariama, an outstanding athlete and a special person is leaving," national coach René Spies praised Jamanka's achievements in a statement.

She was the mom of the team that held the store together.

"While it's sad for us, I understand her decision.

It hasn't always been easy for her in recent years, she had to fight a lot and was rewarded for it with the silver medal at the Olympics," said Spies, emphasizing that Jamanka was also a great asset for himself: "She gave me in always helped my work.”

“There were highs I never expected, but also many lows that were probably worse than most people can imagine.

It wasn't always easy, but it was worth it," Jamanka wrote on Instagram.

She herself sees the great teamwork as the key to her successes, which also include two World Championships and three European Championships as well as six World Cup victories.

"Ultimately, these were never just my results, but the result of hard teamwork and great sacrifice."

Without her family, coaches, clubs, sponsors, teammates and the Bundeswehr, “much of it would not have been possible.

I am very grateful for that."
