"Cup" causes a fine of 100,000 euros to a German club

German football club Bochum announced today that it has been fined 100,000 euros ($108,000,370) for throwing a cup onto the pitch, hitting a referee and causing the team's match against Borussia Moenchengladbach to be canceled last March.

A cup of drinks was thrown from the stands and hit the flag bearer, to stop play during the second half of the match, when Mönchengladbach was leading 2-0, after which it was decided to cancel it.

At a later time, it was announced that Monchengladbach had won the match, with the same score that was then cancelled.

Today, the German Football Association announced the financial penalty imposed on Bochum, adding that the club will remain under observation until the end of next season, and will be punished with a partial closure of the stadium's stands if such an incident is repeated.

Also, Bochum must develop and implement standards for the installation of a high-definition video surveillance system in the stadium, before the end of this year.

In connection with the Mönchengladbach match, the Bochum Public Prosecutor's Office had charged the 38-year-old who threw the cup onto the pitch with assault charges.

The club stated: "Procedures are still continuing, and therefore Bochum will not issue further statements on this issue."
