In October last year, the Swedish Football Association confirmed on its website that it wants to apply for the European Women's Football Championship 2025, together with Norway, Denmark and Finland.

Now the government is giving its full support and looking forward to a first-class international sports event.

- In times where only 14 percent of the world's countries are democracies, we must also take responsibility for sporting events ending up in countries that respect human rights and do not become a showcase for dictatorships, says Minister of Sports Anders Ygeman in a press release.

Cooperation between the countries began as early as 2018, in order to investigate the possibilities of applying for a major championship.

France, Switzerland and Ukraine have previously also applied to host the championship.

The deadline for submitting an application is October 2022 and two months later Uefa will decide where the European Championships 2025 will be played.
