Tunisia's Olympic sailing champion Aya Kazekz dies at the age of 17

Tunisian young woman Aya Kazekz, who represented her country in the Tokyo Olympics last summer in sailing, died at the age of 17 in an accident during the national team's training, the International Olympic Committee announced Monday.

The accident occurred on Sunday when the sailboat she was on board with her twin sister and Olympic partner Sarah, capsized due to high winds as Aya drowned while her sister was rescued.

"I am shocked by the news of the death of sailing champion Aya Kozakz," German International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said in a statement on the authority's website. She was an inspiring talent and role model for her generation of athletes.

"Aya Kozhegaz's participation in the Tokyo Olympics alongside her twin sister Sarah will continue to motivate girls everywhere. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and the Olympic community in Tunisia."

The two sisters competed in the 49fx women's windsurfing event at the Tokyo Olympics, ranking 21st.
