Germany's golf idol Bernhard Langer missed the cut at the 86th Masters in Augusta and was eliminated early after two days.

The 64-year-old from Anhausen, Swabia, made four bogeys in the traditional major tournament on Friday and only played one round of 76.

This put the Masters champion from 1985 and 1993 in 78th place at his 39th start on the par 72 course of the Augusta National Golf Club with a total of 152 shots.

Only the top 50 players qualify for the weekend's two rounds.

Thanks to his two Masters triumphs, Langer enjoys a lifetime start at the major tournament in the US state of Georgia.

The German, who lives in Boca Raton, Florida, set a record two years ago when he became the oldest player in tournament history to make the cut.

Again this year, Langer was the oldest player in the field.

Strong opening round

Superstar Tiger Woods only started his second round with the third last group at 7:41 p.m. German time.

14 months after his serious car accident, the 46-year-old Californian played a strong opening round on Thursday and only needed 71 strokes on the magnificent course on Magnolia Lane.

The comeback announcement of the 15-time major winner, who feared losing his right leg after the accident in February 2021 south of Los Angeles, had the golfing world in ecstasy and everything else surrounding the 86th Masters in the shadowed.

Twenty-five years ago, Woods made golf history with his first major win, winning his first of five Masters titles by a record 12 shots.

In 2001, 2002 and 2005, too, the crowd's favorite was allowed to slip on the green winner's jacket.

Title number five followed in 2019 after a long period of suffering.
