Greuther Fürth's defender Marco Meyerhöfer sustained a "serious ankle injury" in Saturday's Bundesliga game at Eintracht Frankfurt.

This was announced by the game association the day after the 0-0 draw at Hessen.

Accordingly, the 26-year-old Meyerhöfer was successfully operated on in the evening.

The defender was out for a “long period of time”, it said.

"For all of us, this moment was a shock that still runs deep today and that pushes the good game yesterday into the background.

We support Marco with everything we can and will accompany him closely on his path to recovery," said sports director Rachid Azzouzi, according to the club's announcement on Sunday.

Meyerhöfer collapsed after a duel with Jens Petter Hauge in the 87th minute.

After a long treatment period, he had to be transported on a stretcher and taken to a hospital.

In the otherwise noisy World Cup arena from 2006, it suddenly became quiet.

Hauge fought back tears.

Meyerhöfer was trained in the Hessians' youth and once played for Eintracht as a youth for eight years.

"Get well soon to Marco Meyerhöfer.

We hope that he will be healthy again soon," said Fürth's coach Stefan Leitl: "At this point I would also like to thank Eintracht's medical department again for the great support."
