On Wednesday, the news came that Jonas Jerebko, in the middle of an ongoing war where Russia invaded Ukraine, signed a contract this season with the Russian big club CSKA Moscow.

- It is an honor to come to such a historic club as CSKA, Jerebko said in an official comment yesterday.

Already yesterday, the Swedish Basketball Association decided to remove the Swedish star from the marketing before the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and today they went one step further.

In a press release, the association writes that it has decided to suspend Jerebko from the national team.

“As a player in the national team, you are a representative of Swedish basketball, and of course also a person to whom we as an organization have a human relationship.

For that reason, it has been central for us to have a direct dialogue with Jonas Jerebko before we announce our position ", the union writes through the chairman Susanne Jidesten.

The union writes that the decision was made after Secretary General Fredrik Joulamo spoke with Jerebko on Wednesday.

During the conversation, Joulamo emphasized that Jerebko's choice to play in Russia is contrary to Swedish basketball's values.

"After this dialogue, we have unfortunately been forced to state that there are no conditions for Jonas Jerebko to represent a Swedish national basketball team," the association writes.

Jerebko was present when the Swedish basketball players played World Cup qualifiers against Croatia at the end of February.

The World Cup qualifiers continue this summer with matches against Finland, June 30, and Slovenia, July 3.

SVT Sport has contacted Jonas Jerebko for a comment but without success.
