The Algerian Football Federation announced today, Thursday, the resignation of its president, Charrafeddine Amara, in an extraordinary meeting, after failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Federation said that, according to the Basic Law, the Executive Office assigned the Vice-President, Mohamed Maoush, to run matters until elections are held within a period not exceeding 60 days.

The union members also decided to meet again on April 11 to prepare for the elections.

Amara took charge a year ago, succeeding Khair El-Din Zetchi, who left his position after one term in the presidency of the Federation, which saw Algeria win the African Cup of Nations in 2019.

It seemed that Algeria was a step away from reaching the finals in Qatar after its 1-0 victory in Cameroon in the first leg of the playoffs, and played the second leg among its huge fans in a stadium that it does not usually lose.

But Cameroon surprisingly won 1-0, and the match went into extra time, and Ahmed Touba equalized 3 minutes before the end of time.

It seemed that Touba would become a popular hero and the winner of the goal that decided qualification for the World Cup, before Karl Toko Ekambi snatched the thunderous winning goal in the 124th minute, and Cameroon snatched the ticket to the finals.

The result ended several disastrous months for the Algerian national team, which was eliminated from the first round in the African Nations Cup, which was held in Cameroon in January, and lost the title it had achieved in 2019.
