Transport strike: keys to the agreement between the Government and carriers
Direct Transport strike, last minute |
The 14th day of the indefinite strike of carriers begins
Manuel Hernández is the president of the National Platform for the Defense of Transport. He is the leader and visible face of the national transport strike that began on March 14, continues today, Sunday, and will be two weeks old tomorrow.
This strike is the most important that has occurred in Spain since the
lockout of June 2008
, which lasted 11 days and in which
two truck drivers were killed
when they participated in two pickets (one in Granada and the other in Portugal).
This strike was where the National Platform for the Defense of Transport became known after being born at the end of 2007, "when
six Galician carriers
decided to set up an Association to bring together medium and small transport companies and begin to defend their interests in the Galician community. At the same time and with the same objectives
, something similar was happening in the La Mancha town of Albacete, where 3 carriers also made the same decision and began the journey
towards the creation of a new Association that would respond to the neglect that carriers suffered from the travel Federations of all life and thus
Platform for the Defense of the Transport of Goods by National and International Road sector emerged"
2008 unemployment
The problem is that the 2008 strike caught them by surprise and almost like "a bunch of buddies".
Without having established the statutes of the association or its legal bases.
Hence, "both the Government, as well as those of the National Committee for Road Transport, as well as the shippers, opened a common front of harassment and demolition against Platform."
This meant that in 2010, Platform practically did not exist.
However, the problems of working below operating costs continued with what the protest movement persecuted by Platform resurfaced
on social networks on May 27, 2021
, the date on which the
Facebook page
of the National Platform was created.
Transport to try
to unite a historically divided sector
and give a voice to the thousands of SMEs and freelancers that make up the grassroots sector ("those who have the trucks, fill the diesel, wear out the tires and pay the salaries").
That same day, the Platform asked the
Ministry of Transport
for an
urgent meeting
to convey to the then minister of the branch,
José Luis Ábalos
, the
"situation of ruin"
of the small and medium-sized transport companies and demand from the Government a decree that prohibited "from resoundingly" the payment of transport services below operating costs, the great workhorse of the sector for years.
On June 30, Manuel Hernández records and publishes on Facebook his first video as spokesperson and visible head of the Platform.
The now president of the organization then presented himself as an
autonomous carrier from Hellín (Albacete)
and asked carriers like him to stop
"talking in the bars and on the docks"
and organize around the same
"tool"
as the
"excited"
in 2008. "Divided we are nothing, but united we have the upper hand.
The time has come for us to unite and to earn respect again
," he said at the time.
Manolin Transport
Many blamed him then that Manuel Hernández himself was to blame for having bankrupted the family business that he inherited from his father,
Transportes Manolín, and which entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2018.
The last accounts presented in the BORME of this company are from 2017, which shows earnings of 22,255.43 euros and a turnover of 812,208.49 euros and debts of 308,762.77 euros.
He was accused on social networks that he had bankrupted his company so as not to pay creditors or drivers, something that Hernández has always denied
.
The truth is that he no longer has trucks.
"The gentlemen who negotiate for us forced me to get off the truck," he wields.
Today, Manuel Hernández has stopped criticizing Pere Navarro for wanting to charge transporters for using the motorways to publish more than 60 videos
on the Platform's Facebook page
in which he has been unraveling, almost daily,
the claims and the steps taken
by the Platform until reaching the indefinite strike on March 14.
The first videos barely exceeded
1,000 views
and hardly anyone knew him.
2022 unemployment
Today his videos, sometimes two or three in the same day, have
hundreds of thousands of views
and Hernández has become the leader of
the truckers'
protests .
The videos of him are
shared through Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp groups
in which carriers organize themselves to coordinate
protest actions, meetings, informational pickets and slow truck marches
like the ones that are traveling and collapsing Spanish roads these days. .
If in 2008 the lockout began because the price of diesel was at 1.3 euros, this time the trigger was once again the price of diesel above 2 euros.
However, 14 years later, the root cause continues to be "the non-existence of a law that prohibits us from working below operating costs".
According to the claims of Platform, "currently and according to the Cost Observatory, the average km of an articulated lorry for national service in general cargo
should be charged at €1.25/km loaded and €1.05/km empty
. This is the price to cover operating costs with a minimum profit, and today the prices imposed by most chargers
are between 0.70 euros and 0.80 euros
(Loaded and empty)".
The Observatory of Costs of Transport of Merchandise by Road is the result of the work that, under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, carried out in April 2021, the National Committee of Transport by Road (CNTC), the Association of Manufacturers and Distributors (AECOC), the Association of Shippers of Spain (AEC) and the Spanish Association of Shippers.
