Piteå Elite took both gold and silver in the Swedish Championship relay for women at home.

In honor of the day, the Piteå riders had painted their cheeks, in the classic relay spirit.

On one cheek they had painted a heart in the colors of Ukraine, on the other they had painted the flag of Yemen, unintentionally.

- We want to point out that it is Piteå Elite's colors, says Charlotte Kalla to SVT Sport.

- There were some views here after the finish, but we may have already felt when we stood there on the toilet and painted our cheeks that this might not be quite right.

Kalla also tells SVT Sport that they received some text messages that drew attention to the painting.

It was also noticed on social media.

"It's tragic and it's touching

Although they realized before the start that the painting could be associated with something other than Piteå Elit SK, they chose to keep it.

- But we felt that "shit, but now we drive", says Kalla.

Ebba Andersson explains the choice to paint the Ukrainian flag.

- We wanted to take this opportunity to support what is happening over there, it is tragic and it affects, she says.

According to the Foreign Policy Institute, a conflict has been going on in Yemen since 2015, which the UN has described as the worst in the world.

As recently as the day before yesterday, this weekend's Formula 1 race was affected when Huthi rebels from Yemen attacked a Saudi oil depot with missiles.
