Just as usual when Armand Duplantis is out competing, we were invited to a show.

The 22-year-old sailed over 5.60, 5.85, 5.95 and 6.05 without a hint of trembling on the bar and then it was over.

The Brazilian Thiago Braz admittedly managed 5.95 in the last attempt but was never close to getting over 6.05.

With the World Cup gold secured, it was time for a world record attempt at a height of 6.20, one centimeter higher than his current record.

The first was never close, Duplantis came wrong to the crossbar and made no attempt to get over it.

The second attempt went the same way.

Duplantis: "Do not understand what just happened"

"Do not understand what happened"

Before the third, he did his best to applaud the audience and it paid off.

Duplantis took over 6.20 with a little tremor on the crossbar and thus set a world record for the fourth time.

- I do not understand what just happened, but I'm happy as hell, Duplantis says to SVT Sport.

After the record, he ran to the stands to hug his girlfriend Desiré Inglander and father Greg Duplantis, who was in Belgrade.

- After I set the record, I got a blackout, I do not really remember what I did after I managed it, but it feels so special to be able to hug my girlfriend and my dad who never participated when I broke a world record.

For me, it was a little more special with him because without him I would not have been here today so it was just right that he got to experience a world record, says Duplantis to SVT Sport.

The dream comes true

The World Cup gold is Duplanti's first as a senior.

He already has an Olympic gold (2021) and a World Cup silver (2019).

- This was my biggest goal when I was younger: to win the World Cup and break the world record at a championship and now that dream has come true, says Duplantis.

- 6.20 sounds very good.

That was the next barrier.

It has a special sound.

American Chris Nilsen finished third after breaking out at 5.95.
