Saudi cooperation ends its association with coach Gomez

Al-Taawon, the rival in the Saudi Professional Football League, decided today, Sunday, to terminate the contract of Portuguese coach Jose Gomez by mutual consent and assign the national coach, Mohammed Al-Abdali, the responsibility temporarily.

Al-Taawoun tied 1-1 away with Abha yesterday, Saturday, to raise its score to 26 points in 13th place, one point behind the relegation zone, five rounds before the end of the competition.

Al-Taawon said in a statement on its Twitter account, "The club's management decided to terminate the contract of Portuguese coach Jose Gomez by mutual consent between the two parties and thanked the coach and his assistant staff, wishing him success in his next stop."

"The national coach, Mohammed Al-Abdali, was assigned to lead the first team temporarily."

Gomez, 51, ended his third term with Al-Taawoun, after the first from 2014 to 2016 and then the second in the 2017-2018 season, before taking over the team's coaching for the third time last year.

Gomez previously trained clubs in Portugal and worked as an assistant coach for Porto, Malaga, and Olympiacos of Greece, and then led Hungarian Videoton before coaching Al-Taawoun in 2014.

He also led Al-Ahly of Saudi Arabia and Baniyas of the United Arab Emirates after his first period with Al-Taawon.

Al-Taawoun is playing the AFC Champions League matches in Group D alongside the Qatari clubs Al-Duhail, Uzbekistan's Pakhtakor, and Iran's Sepahan.
