The Dutchman Verstappen was behind the British Lewis Hamilton during virtually the entire race, re-running the seven-time world champion Hamilton at the end of the race, after a crash that caused it to restart, which meant that Hamilton's lead disappeared.

Hamilton's stable Mercedes filed two protests immediately after the race, which were rejected fairly quickly.

"Human error"

Now, however, the International Motorsports Federation, Fia, admits that the verdicts at the end of the race were incorrect.

A report, which British Sky Sports reports on, states that the race's race director "took back the safety car without having completed the extra lap required by the regulations".

However, the report states that it was a "human error".

"The report has concluded that competition leaders acted with good intentions and did the best he could with his knowledge given the difficult circumstances, especially considering that it was a limited time frame and that there was a huge pressure from the stables," says that in the report, which states that the results are final and cannot be changed.
