A glitch in goal-line technology sparks controversy in the German League

Referee Felix Zafer confirmed that a goal-line technology malfunction occurred in the match between Mainz and Armenia Bielefeld in the German Football League (Bundesliga) today, Saturday.

The referee pointed to his wristwatch showing that the ball crossed the goal line after a header from Mainz player Moussa Niakhat.

But the VAR technology saw that the ball did not all cross the goal line and the goal was canceled.

"The contractor has to deal with this," Tsafer told reporters. "We heard that the system was checked during the match and that there was already a malfunction."

The referee went to the screen on the side of the field to make sure.

Goal-line technology has been in football since 2012 and has been largely problem-free.
