The catch-up hunters from VfB Stuttgart have left the relegation zone of the Bundesliga for the time being.

The Swabians defeated FC Augsburg 3-2 (1-2) in an intense basement duel on Saturday and moved up to 14th place in the table.

André Hahn (6th minute) and Michael Gregoritsch (45+1) scored for Augsburg in front of 55,785 spectators, Waldemar Anton (44th) scored the interim 1-1 for VfB.

In the closing stages, Omar Marmoush (79') and Tiago Tomás (85') turned the game in favor of the hosts with their goals.

Augsburg in 15th, like VfB and Hertha BSC in relegation rank 16, now has 26 points, but still has one more game to play than its direct competitors.

Stuttgart, who said goodbye to their CEO Thomas Hitzlsperger before kick-off, got off to a stormy start – and promptly fell behind when Augsburg had their first chance.

After a cross from Iago, Hahn hammered the ball directly into the bottom left corner of the six-yard corner.

It was the fourth goal of the season for the veteran, who had returned to the starting XI in place of the injured Noah Sarenren Bazee (torn cruciate ligament).

However, the hosts seemed to cope well with the setback and remained the dominant team.

A shot by VfB captain Wataru Endo (17') was relatively harmless, a flick by Tiago Tomás was much more dangerous (23').

Things got really hot in the 28th minute when FCA defender Reece Oxford was just able to block a Sasa Kalajdzic shot.

Ten minutes later, former Stuttgart player Carlos Gruezo threw himself in the way of a shot from Marmoush.

Shortly before the break, VfB, who had previously scored against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3-2) and Union Berlin (1-1) from behind, were rewarded for their efforts – before suffering the next setback straight away.

Stuttgart's defense chief Anton headed in from the left after a Borna Sosa free-kick from a few yards out to equalize.

Less than two minutes later, Gregoritsch put the guests ahead again with a low shot after strong preparatory work by Arne Maier.

It was already the fifth goal of the second half of the season for the Austrian.

In the second half, too, the VfB fans, who were only allowed into the stadium in large numbers thanks to a special permit, loudly pushed their team forward.

The Augsburgers continued to act extremely defensively, but were initially not in too much trouble - until another standard situation initiated the Stuttgart turnaround.

Marmoush curled a free-kick from the edge of the box into the left corner, opening a wild final phase with chances at both ends.

Tiago Tomás used one of them to make it 3:2 for VfB.
