An unusual protest action has led to the Premier League game between Everton FC and Newcastle United being briefly suspended.

At Thursday night's encounter, a spectator ran onto the field to secure himself to the goalpost with a zip tie around his neck.

The young man wore an orange T-shirt that read "Just Stop Oill," a campaign group working to stop fossil fuel exploration in the UK.

Several stewards moved in to free the man with bolt cutters and carry him off the field.

The police said the 21-year-old was taken into custody.

The game resumed after a 10-minute break.

Relegation-threatened Everton finally prevailed thanks to a last-minute goal and celebrated an important home win over Newcastle from a man down.

However, the game ended painfully for Everton coach Frank Lampard: "I broke my hand while celebrating," said the 43-year-old.

"It's a little sore and a little wobbly, but I don't care." Lampard seemed to celebrate Alex Iwobi's late winner in the ninth minute of injury time too much.

The Toffees are now 17th in the Premier League table, three points clear of the relegation zone, while Newcastle are 14th.
