Interview Ana Peleteiro: "The fact that the two medalists were black will piss off a lot of people"
Ana Peleteiro
says
that the young people of the Spanish team at the Indoor World Cup in Belgrade treat her like a veteran and that one of these days one of them is going to get a slap.
She 26 years old she has her.
And in reality, she does not add up to that many in the elite, but they seem to be more, much more, for four reasons.
The first, that she dazzled too young, a decade ago, as junior world champion.
The second, her bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and her relevance.
The third, surrounded by a handful of beardless people.
And the fourth, that she never hides her speech, even beyond athletics.
She doesn't like her, but she's a little veteran, she is.
"The medals and the records are the pear, but when I retire, people may remember me as a reference and that is what fills me the most. Life does not end in athletics, my parents have taught me and I carry it for flag," says Peleteiro, with a claim to make about the war in Ukraine: "I know little about politics. War has never helped solve a problem, but I think there are many wars in Syria, Israel or Africa and they don't matter because we don't have them close".
Since the Games, the triple jumper has become the only Spanish athlete capable of jumping the frontiers of her own sport, of being recognized by the uninitiated and that is a lot, it is a lot.
Her medal, her celebration, her speech, her union with
Yulimar Rojas,
her friendship with the gymnast
Ray Zapata
... all of this led her to stardom that she calmly manages, a complicated matter. .
There were recent dislikes, such as an act that she wanted to take advantage of her name, an absurd controversy over her new car or the interest of the tabloid press for her relationship with the French jumper
Benjamin Compaoré
, but they did not take away the dream.
"Mentally I am very well, very happy, something that is key for things to work, and in training everything is very good. I do not arrive with the best of my marks but I am healthy, something that does not usually happen in indoor championships", comments the jumper, of whom it is hardly necessary to underline her modest record of this course (14.15 meters);
competition will be the same as always.
Except for injury, the gold will go to Rojas, there is no doubt about that, but the silver and bronze will be around 14.50 meters and that is a distance that she knows very well.
An army of runners
Thus, at the Indoor World Cup in Belgrade, which begins this Friday, Peleteiro will be one of Spain's options for medals, but above all it will be the benchmark and, in some way, the best example of general joy.
Not so long ago, in 2014 or 2016, the national team attended these championships with
Ruth Beitia
as lifeguard and now they travel with a different spirit.
In fact, only the United States and Great Britain come with more athletes.
The new generation that emerged before and during the Games can now consecrate themselves on top of the podium in a decisive year, with World and European Championships in the open air.
"It is impossible to forecast results, and even less on the indoor track, but we have a very powerful team," says Raúl Chapado, president of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA), who accepts a challenge: at least the two should be equal. medals from the last edition, Birmingham 2018. For this, Spain has Peleteiro in the triple and an army of runners with possibilities.
In the 400 meters,
Bruno Hortelano
and
Manuel Guijarro
;
in the 800,
Mariano García
and
Álvaro de Arriba
;
in the 3,000 meters,
Adel Mechaal
;
and in the 4x400 relay, the group.
All of them could celebrate in a big way, as would other summoned, the hurdler
Asier Martínez
, the middle- distance runner
Ignacio Fontes
or the sprinter
Maribel Pérez
, if they finish in finalist positions.
Despite the losses of
Orlando Ortega, Eusebio Cáceres, Adrián Ben, Mohamed Katir
or
María Vicente
, under the roof of Belgrade, Spain seeks momentum to declare itself a power.
It has a team to spare and a leader, Peleteiro, who is as young as she is veteran.
Although it would be better not to tell her.
