England full back Kieran Trippier made a huge impact in Spain when he was at Atletico Madrid, playing under Argentine coach Diego Simeone.

The English international moved to Rojiblancos in 2019, won the League title in the 2020-2021 season, and was greatly loved by the team's fans and coach, before deciding to return to Newcastle United in January 2022.

"What the fans see on the bench in matches, Simeone does every day in training, he is very emotional and obsessed," Trippier said - in a radio interview.

He continued, "He was calling me while I was trying to sleep in bed, it's crazy behavior, something I've never experienced before, talking about things I could have done better in matches."

"I've been getting messages and calls from him about matches, and that's where he's obsessed. He's an incredible coach, emotional is the exact word to describe him."

Simeone has coached Atletico since 2011, winning the League on two occasions, reaching the Champions League final twice, and winning two European League titles, in addition to the King's Cup title.

Trippier believes the Argentine coach has developed him as a player, especially when it comes to his defensive duties.

"The training was hard and crazy," Trippier added.

He concluded, "If you do not work hard, he will take you out of the box, and he does not care about your history and your name because you have to run and play seriously, his words are unbelievable, and I respect him for that."
