When Russia invaded Ukraine just over two weeks ago, West Ham's Ukrainian midfielder Andrei Jarmolenko chose to take a temporary break from football.

The 32-year-old had his family, wife and children, left in his home country and therefore decided to leave England and help his family escape Ukraine.

Today he was thus back on the football field when West Ham hosted Aston Villa.

Jarmolenko was substituted 52 minutes into the game.

18 minutes later he had shot 1-0 to the home team and the celebration became emotional.

The 32-year-old fell to his knees in tears and was surrounded by his teammates at the same time as the home crowd praised him.

The match later ended 2-1 to West Ham.
