Two weeks since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, one of the country's biggest sports profiles is now speaking out for the first time.

Marija Sharapova, former world number one in tennis and five-time grand slam winner, writes on social media that she donates money to the victims in Ukraine.

"With each passing day, I am becoming more and more sad about the images and stories of families and children affected by this growing crisis in Ukraine.

I donate to Save the Children, an organization that works tirelessly to provide food, water and aids to help those who need it, "writes Marija Sharapova on Instagram.

"Pray for peace"

Sharapova also urges others to donate money to Save the Children, for the benefit of those affected in Ukraine.

"I pray for peace and give my love and support to all who are affected," she writes.

The 34-year-old Russian, who was born in Siberia when Russia was the Soviet Union, ended his tennis career in 2020 and now lives in the United States.
