Russian Daniil Medvedev sent a new message in favor of peace on Wednesday in Indian Wells, where he will show his new status as world number 1 on the courts.

"My message is always the same, I want peace all over the world," said the Australian Open finalist at a press conference, deprived of the Russian flag next to his name.

Tennis authorities have indeed decided that Russian and Belarusian players cannot compete under the name or flag of their country following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, a situation to which is forced to s accommodate Daniil Medvedev.

“I want to play tennis, play in different countries, I want to promote my sport, commented the 26-year-old player.

At the moment the situation is such that it's the only way for me to play, so that's what I'm going to do.

A status to defend and "a lot of pressure"

Beaten in Australia by Rafael Nadal who conquered his 21st Grand Slam title against him then again by the same player in the semi-finals in Acapulco, he could find the Spaniard in the semi-finals also in Indian Wells from where absent Novak Djokovic due to US Covid regulations.

Medvedev acknowledged there was "a lot of pressure" to play as world No. 1 "but at the same time a lot of motivation".

“The Australian Open made me mature,” added the Russian, who was fined $12,000 for getting angry with a referee in the semi-final against Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.

“I realized that I had a lot to work on myself,” he said at the time.
