The ghost of Djoko-Gate during the last Australian Open hovering over Indian Wells?
The question arises today as the American tournament is about to begin.
Indeed, the name of the Serb is on the list before Tuesday's draw but the situation is not at all clear since he is still not vaccinated against Covid-19.
To believe that the organizers have not learned the lesson of the huge Australian bazaar last January…
A brief statement from tournament organizers said officials were in contact with Djokovic's team to determine whether he would play in California or even be allowed to enter the United States in the absence of a vaccination.
"Novak Djokovic is on the tournament entry list and is therefore placed in the draw today," the tournament chiefs said.
“We are currently in communication with his team;
however, it has not been determined whether he will participate in the event by obtaining approval from the CDC, the main public health agency in the United States, to enter the country, ”they specified, those who had stated earlier that proof of vaccination would be required for spectator entry to the venue.
Under US government regulations, all non-US citizen travelers entering the United States must be vaccinated against Covid-19.
A third Medvedev-Nadal match in less than two months?
While Djokovic's status remains up in the air, Tuesday's draw raised the possibility of another blockbuster showdown between new world number one Daniil Medvedev and 21-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal.
The Russian star could face Nadal in the semi-finals in what would be their third meeting in less than two months.
Nadal has won his two encounters with Medvedev this year: the epic Australian Open final and the Mexican Open final last month.
For his part, Medvedev has never won Indian Wells and was knocked out in the round of 16 at last year's tournament.
Nadal, a three-time Indian Wells winner, will take part there for the first time since 2019.
