Alexander Ovechkin has overtaken Jaromir Jagr in the list of the best scorers in the history of the National Hockey League.

The Russian scored a double in the away match against Calgary, and now he has 766 goals.

The Czech also scored his last goal in the NHL against the Flames.

Playing in Canada was special for Washington captain and partner Niklas Beckström.

They took to the ice together for the thousandth time.

This happened for the first time on October 5, 2007, and in 15 years the Russian and the Swede have become a great duet.

Anniversary for hockey players the match began for the Capitals is not easy.

Already in the first minutes, the guests had a chance to open an account in the majority, but they did not score, and after Rasmus Andersson left the penalty box, the opponent had a two-on-one counterattack, which was completed by Elias Lindholm.

Ovechkin's first shot on target failed only at the start of the second period.

Oleksandr aimed his shot from the top from an average distance, but goalkeeper Daniel Vladarzh saved the puck with his shoulder, after which it struck the crossbar.

The opponent's attacks were more successful.

So, after the mistake of the Washington players, Adam Ruzicka successfully played in his zone and increased the advantage of Calgary - 2:0.

However, the Capitals quickly returned to the game.

First, Conor Sheary closed the gap, and then Ovechkin equalized.

First, in a foreign zone, he held a powerful power reception on Chris Tanev and took the puck from him.

Evgeny Kuznetsov picked it up on the spot and left it for the captain.

The Russian accurately threw into the top corner of the goal, leaving no chance for goalkeeper Daniel Vladarzh.

After not the brightest February, the hockey player again becomes like himself.

Since January 25, Alexander had only five goals in 13 matches.

However, two goals in a row, "Caroline" and "Seattle", apparently, returned courage to the striker.

The last period began with the Calgary taking the lead again.

However, Washington, after a series of three defeats in recent matches, has regained its winning spirit and is fighting in every game.

Less than five minutes later, Anthony Manta first regained the balance, and then Nick Dowd put the Capitals ahead for the first time in the game.

Well, at the end of the period, Ovechkin achieved what everyone had been waiting for so long - caught up with Jagr and took third place in the list of the best snipers in NHL history.

In the 59th minute, Alexander hit an empty net, turning the score into 5:3, and Lindholm's goal 40 seconds before the final siren also made the Russian puck victorious.

According to this indicator, Ovechkin is close to the next achievement.

He now has 120 career game-winning goals, with Gordie Howe in second place in history with one clean, decisive shot.

In addition, Ovechkin scored 2+ goals in a match for the 157th time, and he is also third on this list.

Only Wayne Gretzky (189) and Brett Hull (158) are ahead.

After the match, the captain of "Washington", recognized as the first star of the day, traditionally modestly answered questions.

He only noted that he was pleased to be in the same company with such great hockey players, and also thanked his teammates, without whom he would not have achieved such a result.

“Of course, it is always a pleasure to reach such milestones, such figures.

It's a big deal, and as I've always said, it's great to be in the same company with such great people.

I think everyone was happy today: the fans, the organizers, and my family, ”the official NHL website quoted the Russian as saying.

I had no doubt that Alexander would overtake him in the list of the best snipers in history, and Jagr himself.

“He is a born scorer.

The game has changed a lot, and this is to his advantage, because he does not lag behind, easily keeps pace.

He has a very good throw.

But his huge advantage over the rest is that now there is no one, really no one can compare with him in strength.

Therefore, if he doesn’t want to, you can’t stop him, ”said the hockey player.

The head coach of “Washington” Peter Laviolette, in turn, was upset that Ovechkin could not distinguish himself three times.

At the same time, according to the specialist, Alexander's desire to catch up with Wayne Gretzky in the list of the best snipers in the league does not prevent the team from fulfilling its tasks.

“The guys, I think, are just happy for him.

I don't know if this bothers anyone.

We don't really talk about it.

Everyone probably understands everything, and it's great to participate in this, in a game where he scores a double.

I don't think it distracts from the game and from our tasks.

Situations arise, the game is on, and he can send the puck into the net.

He climbs [up the list], and in time he will succeed.

But that doesn't really bother anyone.

All the guys are very happy for him.

He deserved it, earned it, ”said Laviolette.
