• Laurent Wauquiez and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region are reluctant to apply to host the Winter Olympics in 2030.

consulted, this would be a good way to reuse the infrastructure built for the Albertville Olympics in 1992.

  • But this also raises economic, ecological and logistical questions that should not be overlooked and which can jeopardize the project.

Back to the future for the Olympic Games in Savoie?

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region could apply to organize the 2030 Winter Games. Even if it is only a potential application, the community chaired by Laurent Wauquiez has approached the various municipalities of Savoie which hosted events in 1992, during the Albertville Olympic Games, in order to have their return.

We also consulted you via a call for testimonials to get your opinions on this hypothesis.

And this prospect enchants some but annoys others.

Nostalgic, some of you would like to experience the magic of the Olympic Games again.

“I have just extraordinary memories of Albertville, with the skiing events in Méribel and a Canada-Norway hockey match.

I was 10 years old,” remembers Guilhem.

But for others, the memory is more bitter.

“I was a taxi driver during the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville.

I had to give up because we couldn't go any further due to the lack of impassable highways,” says Lionel.

Differing opinions

Obviously, the organization of the Olympic Games would bring the arrival of many tourists.

But Francis sees it in a good light.

“An excellent idea both for the economy and for the reputation of the region.

We have exceptional ski areas which create non-relocatable jobs”.

With 173 resorts and nearly 90,000 jobs, the region actually has a large ski area.

But faced with the discovery of certain artificial installations at the recent Beijing Olympics, many of you are banging your fists on the table.

While Nicolas speaks of “ecological aberration”, Christian explains that “the modification of the climate is no longer manageable.

It is very difficult to recover from sudden climatic changes.

"Ecological aberration" but also economic aberration entrust other readers.

Even if "the idea is attractive" for Olivier, he is not "tempted to see the taxes of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region increase".

While Maurice is "fed up with taxes" and Marie finds that there are "already enough expenses", Christian, another reader of "20 Minutes", is sorry to pay "a fortune for little or no infrastructure used afterwards.

Beyond a question of means, it now remains to be seen whether Laurent Wauquiez and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region will indeed submit a candidacy to host the Winter Olympics in 2030.
