From a distance, they looked like the ideal Winter Paralympics for
Víctor González
.
Spanish flag bearer at the opening ceremony, he had qualified for the snowboard cross quarterfinals (category SB-LL1) with extraordinary time and looked like a candidate for a medal.
In Beijing he was playing his second Games after Pyeongchang 2018 - there he was thirteenth - and was around notable positions in the world ranking.
Until this Monday...
"The athlete Víctor González has been disqualified from the snowboard cross event of the Paralympic Games on March 7, 2022, since he is involved in a disciplinary matter. The Spanish Paralympic Committee (CPE) cannot comment further on the circumstances of this measure until the case is resolved," the CPE said in a statement, while sources from the agency assured this newspaper that the silence corresponded to "a legal imperative."
According to part of the delegation, González continues in the Zhangjiakou Olympic Village, near Beijing, and there he will be waiting for his situation to be resolved, although it is unlikely that he will compete in the slalom event, the other specialty for which he was signed up.
Along with
Pol Makuri,
González formed the small Spanish delegation to the event, the smallest in history.
González suffered an accident in 2015 while snowboarding in the Aigüestortes National Park.
A crash caused his C5 and C6 vertebrae to fracture, leaving him without feeling in his arms and legs.
"At that time I came to think about euthanasia but not because I couldn't play sports but because I saw myself as a burden for my family," he confessed to Marca before recounting the long rehabilitation that allowed him to walk again, to play sports and finally to compete.
