The route of the flame for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will not pass through Isère, the Departmental Council announced on Monday.

Martine Kohly, vice-president in charge of sport and youth quoted by France Bleu Isère, indicated that the organizing committee of the Olympic Games billed the event 180,000 euros.

She judged the price “exorbitant for a day of passage”.

Unjust and too high price

The local authorities also highlighted the fact that only ten of the 39 towns in Isère labeled “land of games” would have hosted the torch, thus creating an injustice.

The department therefore preferred to dedicate a significant budget to events devised to illustrate the values of Olympism.

The aid provided to the municipalities organizing such events will generate beneficial effects in the longer term than the passage of the Olympic flame, it was estimated at the Departmental Council.

Several departments have taken a similar decision, including Rhône, Loire-Atlantique, Côtes-d'Armor and even Meurthe-et-Moselle.
