Fittipaldi, who has been a test driver for Haas, will take over Mazepin's place during the pre-season tests in Bahrain and looks set to shoulder the responsibility during the season as well.

Another who could take over is Antonio Giovinazzi, who did not get an extended contract with Alfa Romeo before the season.

- We have several candidates, let's see who would be available and on what conditions.

On Wednesday we have someone, says the stable's owner Gene Haas to AP.

Pietro Fittipaldi is the grandson of the former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi and his teammate Mick Schumacher is the son of the legendary Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher is making his second season in Formula 1, while colleague Fittipaldi is more green.

But he is not completely above at World Cup competitions.

When former Haas driver Roman Grosjean crashed during the 2020 season, Fittipaldi had to run two races in his place.

Haas broke his contract with Mazepin after Russia invaded Ukraine.

The father, Dimitrij Mazepin, has through the company Uralkali been the biggest sponsor of the stable and will have connections to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
