Patrick Roest was the favorite for the gold in the all-round World Cup.

The Dutchman is stronger on short distances (500 meters and 1500 meters) and he also had a big lead before the final 10,000-meter race.

Roest had about 22 seconds to spare on van der Poel.

But the Swede went in 12.41.56, eleven seconds from his own world record and put a lot of pressure on Roest.

The Dutchman looked tired early in the race and quickly lost his lead - and when all was said and done, he was far behind van der Poel.

- It was definitely not good enough.

I gave everything I had but the shape is not where it should be.

After eight laps, the legs felt dead and then there was a long way to go, says Roest.

Nils van der Poel said before the WC that his form was worse than during the Olympics in Beijing, but Roest is not particularly surprised by the Swede's WC success.

- I knew I needed to go at a lap time of around 30 seconds, and those were the times I had in my head.

He (van der Poel) did not surprise me, but I was not good enough, he says.
