Guardiola: Man City are in great need of a striker

Man City coach Pep Guardiola said, "The Premier League leaders are in great need of signing a striker after the end of the current season to compensate for the departure of historical striker Sergio Aguero."

City does not play with an outright striker this season, after the Argentine striker left at the end of last season.

City failed in more than one attempt to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.

"I think the club needs a striker for sure," Guardiola was quoted as saying by the BBC, ahead of Sunday's derby against Manchester United.

"You say we play great without a striker because we win. When we don't win, you say we need a striker."

City lead the league by three points from Liverpool, but scored fewer goals than coach Jurgen Klopp's team.

Guardiola's team scored 64 goals in 27 league games this season, compared to 71 goals for its closest competitor.

Aguero, who scored 260 goals with City, left at the end of last season and moved to Barcelona, and the team failed to sign a replacement.

Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus has been playing as a winger this season, while City sold Ferran Torres, another player who can play as a striker, to Barcelona in January.

"In the Premier League you have to play with a striker, so we need a striker, and I think the club will try to do that," Guardiola said.
