Djokovic offers financial aid to Sakhovsky, who is fighting in Ukraine

Serbian Novak Djokovic, ranked second in the world, promised on Sunday to provide financial assistance to former Ukrainian tennis player Sergei Stakhovsky, who is joining his country's army to defend his land from the Russian invasion.

"I'm thinking of you...I hope things will calm down as soon as possible. Tell me where I can send help to you...financial assistance or any other kind of help," Noli wrote in an interview he gave on WhatsApp and posted on Instagram by the Ukrainian.

Stakhovsky, the former world number 31, became famous after defeating Swiss Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013, before retiring at the age of 36 after the Australian Open earlier this year, to decide to go to the capital, Kyiv, to take up arms in defense of his country.

Many Ukrainian athletes joined the army to face the Russian invasion, most notably former Olympic boxer Vasily Lomachenko and former world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
