The second division soccer club Schalke 04 took the consequences one day after the 3:4 against Hansa Rostock and fired head coach Dimitrios Grammozis.

The Royal Blues announced this Sunday morning.

In addition to Grammozis, his assistant Sven Piepenbrock and goalkeeping coach Wil Coort were released.

“We have reached the phase of the season where the big decisions are made.

We were no longer convinced that our target, promotion to the Bundesliga, still had a sufficiently high probability in the current constellation.

We are therefore of the opinion that the team needs a new impetus in the season finale," said sporting director Rouven Schröder.

Knäbel: "Lack of consistency"

Since the beginning of the year, the team has lacked "the necessary consistency, both in terms of the result and in particular the central performance parameters," said Sport Director Peter Knäbel.

The club is still convinced of the quality of the squad.

Knäbel: "But in order to be successful in the fight for the top positions, we need continuous further development, which we discussed but didn't see."

Grammozis took over the Revierklub almost exactly a year ago.

He was also unable to prevent relegation from the Bundesliga.

Schalke did not initially name a successor.

A regeneration unit is to take place this Sunday. The club intends to provide information on how to proceed over the course of Monday.

After the 25th match day, the Royal Blues are only sixth in the table.

The Bundesliga relegated team has only taken four points from the past four games and has already suffered eight defeats this season.

The gap to the first direct promotion place is six points even before the Sunday games (from 1.30 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the second division and on Sky).
