A fan was shot dead before the start of an important match in the Brazilian League

Brazilian police said Sunday that a fan was shot dead during a clash between supporters in the southeastern Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, hours before the match between historic rivals Cruzeiro and Atlético Mineiro.

The 25-year-old was shot in the stomach, and was taken to hospital, but died of his injuries.

Local police said that a passerby who was at the scene at the time of the clash was shot in the shoulder and his condition is considered "stable".

About 50 people participated in the riots in the Bella Vista area east of Belo Horizonte, a city of 2.5 million people.

Pictures circulating on social media show groups of fans running in different directions under thick smoke, with residents afraid of the sound of gunfire.

Many cars were vandalized and windows were smashed.

And one of the fans was shot dead three weeks ago in Sao Paulo during riots near the stadium of Palmeiras Club, where the fans gathered to attend the FIFA Club World Cup final, which the Brazilian team lost to Chelsea 2-1.
