The Russian Football Federation on Monday denounced a "discriminatory" measure after the exclusion of its national team from the World Cup in reaction to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

The federation said in a statement that it "totally disagrees with the decision of Fifa and UEFA to suspend Russian teams from all international matches for an indefinite period".

Towards a challenge in court?

This measure "has a clear discriminatory effect on a large number of athletes, coaches, club or national team employees and, more importantly, on millions of Russian and foreign fans", she added. .

The Russian federation also affirmed that it "reserves the right to challenge this decision of Fifa and UEFA in accordance with international sports law", without providing further details.

Fifa and UEFA announced in a joint statement on Monday that Russia, host of the 2018 World Cup, was excluded from the World Cup, the next edition of which will take place in Qatar next November and December.

The men's national team is not the only one concerned, since the women's selection will not be able to play the Euro in England in July, and Spartak Moscow, the last Russian club engaged in the European Cup this season, is excluded from the Europa League.

This spectacular banishment of the Russian teams comes in full invasion of Ukraine by the army of Moscow.

This military aggression sparked an international outcry and economic sanctions against Russia.

From football to tennis, via athletics and basketball, the sports world has also reacted strongly.
