Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo is German indoor long jump champion for the fifth time in a row.

The world champion won the national track and field championships in Leipzig on Sunday with a jump of 6.81 meters.

Mihambo did not quite come close to her world best of 6.96 meters, which she jumped in Düsseldorf last Sunday.

As in the previous year, second place went to Merle Homeier from Göttingen, this time with 6.66 meters.

"It was a good competition," said the 28-year-old from LG Kurpfalz.

Her trainer told her that there hadn't been such a large winning distance at a German indoor championship for 25 years.

"It's a German championship, so I take it very seriously and I'm happy about every title," she emphasized on ARD.

The sportswoman of the year sailed to victory in the second attempt.

Merle Homeier, who placed second, said after the award ceremony that it was always an honor to be able to compete with such a great athlete as Malaika.

On the other hand, it is also "a bit stupid" because you actually have no chance of winning.

Mihambo will now end her indoor season and will not take part in the World Championships in three weeks in Belgrade.

The 28-year-old from LG Kurpfalz is now concentrating on the outdoor season with the World Championships in Eugene in the USA in mid-July and the European Championships a month later in Munich.
