Kylian Mbappe scored two goals from his colleague Lionel Messi, to compensate Paris Saint-Germain from behind and win 3-1 at home to struggling Saint Etienne on Saturday, and move 16 points clear at the top of the French Football League.

France striker Mbappe scored once in each half and then set up Danilo Pereira's third goal with a header at the far post.

Saint-Etienne, who had scored 10 points in their last four matches to jump from last place out of the relegation zone, advanced through Denis Bouanga in the 16th minute and maintained their advantage even three minutes before the break when Messi crossed Mbappe to equalize.

The Argentine captain made another goal for his French colleague two minutes after the second half, and five minutes later Pereira concluded the goals.

Despite Messi's brilliance in creating goals, especially for Mbappe, he still misses his way to the net in the French League, unlike his heavy goals in the Spanish League with Barcelona before his move to Saint-Germain at the beginning of the current season.

Earlier on Saturday, Nice jumped to second place after a 0-0 draw with its fifth-placed host, Strasbourg.

Nice has 46 points, compared to 62 points for Paris Saint-Germain after 26 games.

Olympique de Marseille, who is trailing Nice on goal difference, can regain second place if they avoid losing to Troyes on Sunday.
