The IOC Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee today (25th) asked each federation to move or cancel sporting events scheduled in Russia or Belarus, dpa news agency reported.

In a statement, the Executive Board urged the Russian and Belarusian governments to consider this as a violation of the Olympic cease-fire resolution, and to put the safety of the athletes as the top priority.

The Executive Board also requested that "the flags of Russia or Belarus be not raised or their national anthems played at international sporting events".

The Olympic Truce Resolution has been adopted every two years since 1993, in the year immediately preceding the Olympic Games, in commemoration of the ancient Greek tradition of cessation of all hostilities during the Olympic Games.

Ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, a cease-fire period was declared at the UN General Assembly in December last year from January 28, seven days before the opening of the Olympic Games, to March 20, seven days after the closing of the Paralympic Games, according to the agreement of 193 member states at the UN General Assembly.
