A Syrian player faces a historic opportunity to break a 48-year-old record

There is a historic opportunity for the Syrian national team player and the Iraqi Police Club, Mahmoud Al-Mawas, to be the first foreign professional (non-Iraqi) to be crowned the top scorer of the Iraqi league for the current season, over a period of 48 years, i.e. since 1974, which witnessed the launch of the first official version of the Iraqi League.

In the event that Al-Mawas maintains his current lead in the scorers’ ranking, he will be the first professional player to win the title, which was dominated by Iraqi players, most notably the historical scorer Sahib Abbas, who scored 177 goals and others, including Thamer Youssef (Al-Zawra), Ali Hussein Mahmoud (the Police), Karim Saddam (Al-Zawra) and Rahim Hamid (Al-Hish), in addition to the late Ahmed Radi, and many other names of Iraqi football stars.

Al-Mawas has scored 14 goals so far, becoming the most professional scorer in the Iraqi league, after 23 rounds have passed this season, as he contributed to the top of his police team in the league with 60 points, ahead of the student runner-up by 46 points.
