16-year-old Indian Rameshappu Bragnananda achieved a resounding surprise, and beat Norway's Sven Magnus Carlsen - ranked number one in the world in chess - during an online tournament, to win wide praise in his country.

The rookie prodigy Pragnananda defeated Carlsen, 31, in just 39 moves, to be crowned the Airthing Masters fast chess championship on Monday evening, according to what the Government Sports Authority of India announced, via its Twitter account.

According to Indian media, this is the biggest win so far for Pragnananda, who became the youngest player to defeat Carlsen since he became world champion for the first time in 2013.

Bragnananda became the third Indian player - after Viswanathan Anand and Bentala Harikrishna - to win against Carlsen.

The teenager - born in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu - became the youngest international master in history when he was 10 years old in 2016. The title of international master is given to those who achieve specific achievements in the game of chess.

The Norwegian won the world chess title for the fifth time in a row last December, after beating Russia's Ian Nepomnyashchi, in an epic 8-hour match.
