Finland already has two Olympic silver medals in ice hockey.

But never before have you been allowed to receive the noblest denomination at an Olympic game - until today.

18 years after the final loss to Sweden in the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Finland finally clinched the long-awaited gold after 2-1 against the Russian team in a real thriller.

However, it did not start well for the Finnish lions.

Already in the eighth minute, Mikhail Grigorenko gave the Russian team the lead.

The Russian lead stood the test of time, but early in the middle of the night Finland found the right thing when Ville Pokka equalized.

Decided in the third

The Finnish decision then came directly in the third period.

Backback Marko Anttila sent the puck in towards goal.

On the way to the goal, the puck was led by Hannes Björninen into the goal to 2-1 behind a hidden Ivan Fedotov in the Russian goal.

The Russian team then did everything they could to get a draw puck, but Finland persevered and thus took their first Olympic gold in ice hockey.
