In the fight against relegation from the Bundesliga, VfB Stuttgart stopped its series of defeats, but missed the hoped-for sense of achievement.

With the 1:1 (0:0) against Bayern conqueror VfL Bochum, coach Pellegrino Matarazzo's penultimate table secured a point on Saturday, which was actually not enough for the hoped-for relegation in the class.

After the last four appearances without a point, Armel Bella Kotchap's own goal (56th minute) wasn't enough because Bochum equalized in added time with a penalty kick from Eduard Löwen (90'+5').

When almost everything spoke for the first win for the Swabians, who were threatened by relegation, since mid-December, VfB defender Konstantinos Mavropanos committed a serious foul in the penalty area in the third minute of added time in front of 20,059 spectators.

A week after the 4-2 coup against the record champions from Munich, Bochum were unable to follow suit and were now the ninth Bundesliga club to remain without a win in the following game after beating FC Bayern.

Sports director Sven Mislintat had renewed the quasi job guarantee for VfB coach Pellegrino Matarazzo before kick-off.

"Football is also a result sport, we don't close our minds to it.

But I can count on it, and I see that every day at work, what's happening in the dressing room, what's happening on the training ground.

And so the statement is very clear and well deserved to Rino that - as long as I have to decide - we will continue on this path together," said Mislintat on Sky.

His Stuttgarters initially followed up on the passionate but unsuccessful performance at 2: 4 in Leverkusen.

After a good quarter of an hour, however, Matarazzo had to accept the next personnel setback.

Silas Katompa Mvumpa held his left shoulder after a duel with Danilo Soares and trotted into the catacombs.

He was replaced by Africa Cup of Nations returnee Omar Marmoush.

The Egyptian national player was not scheduled for an early appearance after his corona infection, nor was striker Sasa Kalajdzic.

For the Austrian striker it was not enough for the starting eleven after his calf problems.

From the warm-up on the sidelines, he saw how his teammates around winter new signing Tiago Tomás were struggling.

Chris Führich (11th) and Marmoush from a distance (42nd) came to shots.

That was all there was to defender Konstantinos Mavropanos having a chance to head the ball just before half-time, but didn't pose a problem for Bochum goalkeeper Manuel Riemann.

Bochum was more dangerous when Gerrit Holtmann overpowered VfB right-back Pascal Stenzel.

Holtmanns' cross but shot Milos Pantovic over the goal (7th).

However, a penalty scene like this from the opening minutes was a rarity in the first half.

Unlike a week ago against Munich, when they scored four goals in half an hour, Bochum were far from an offensive spectacle.

At the beginning of the second half, the Stuttgart fans quickly cheered.

Führich shot in a corner, Mangala headed Bochum's Bella Kotchap and the ball bounced into the goal.

Immediately before that, Marmoush had missed VfB's best chance so far in a counterattack.

He failed at the head of goalkeeper Riemann.

Midfielder Mangala could have calmed his nerves about fifteen minutes before the end, but shot Riemann.

On the other side, Takuma Asano missed the chance to win a point (78th).

A header from Sebastian Polter landed on the post (83').

Then there was a late draw.
