According to video evidence, the German ski crosser Daniela Maier won the bronze medal at the Olympic Winter Games in China.

The 25-year-old from Vöhrenbach initially took fourth and last place in the final on Thursday, but the jury disqualified third-placed Swiss Fanny Smith after studying the video for several minutes.

For the German Ski Association, it is the first Olympic medal in this discipline, which has been in the program since 2010.

Top favorite Sandra Näslund won gold ahead of Canadian Marielle Thompson.

Maier's teammate Johanna Holzmann from Memmingen had previously failed in the quarter-finals.

Maier was already third in qualifying.

This secured her a good starting position for the round of 16, where she confidently prevailed against the Russian Ekaterina Malzewa and Katrin Ofner from Austria.

In the quarterfinals, Maier was actually already hopelessly behind, but fought his way up to second place in the last meters.

Maier won the semi-finals after a photo finish, in the race for gold it was handed for bronze after a long tremor.
