It looked for a while to be able to triple Italian on the podium, after strong rides by Elena Curtoni and Nadia Delago.
Then came Sofia Goggia, just a few weeks after the severe crash, and set the best time.
Suter 16 hundredths before
But there were some strong names left and one of them, Corinne Suter, got on a ride that was enough for the gold.
Sofia Goggia thus failed to defend her Olympic gold from Pyeongchang - but took the silver, 16 hundredths behind the Swiss.
Delago took bronze
Before the competition, however, the Italian stated that it was a victory just to be able to be in place as soon as possible after the crash in Cortina.
- For me, the Olympics are everything.
It is the place where you want to be able to fulfill your childhood dreams.
There is nowhere I would rather be than here, so I do not care how I feel, said Sofia Goggia after one of the training runs.
Nadia Delago in the bronze place was 57 hundredths of a gold.
Shiffrin 2.49 after
American superstar Mikaela Shiffrin, who has had a tough Olympics so far with knockouts in both giant slalom and slalom, was not even close to a medal.
Shiffrin was 2.49 seconds behind Suter - but showed that she can be counted on in the combination on Thursday.
