Conte shocks Tottenham fans: We face an impossible task in qualifying for the Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur coach Antonio Conte said the club faces an "impossible" task in qualifying for the Champions League next season, after a recent decline in its level.

Tottenham suffered their third loss in a row in the English Premier League by losing 2-0 away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday and fell to eighth place with 36 points from 22 games.

Conte has not lost in his first nine league games after taking charge in November, but the optimism surrounding his arrival in north London is quickly fading.

"We know we have to fight to build something important but it's important to know the current situation," Conte told Sky Sports on Sunday. "Maybe our fans shouldn't be disappointed with the defeat, instead they should try to push us and stay behind."

"The players need to find the right atmosphere and not feel any pressure about a goal that can't be reached at the moment. I've said that since I came."

It is the first time that Conte has lost three consecutive league matches since he took charge of Atalanta in the Italian league in November 2009.

Tottenham are five points behind fourth-placed West Ham United, although the north London club has three more games left.

"We need to be realistic and united, the fans must understand that they have to be patient and wait to rebuild again to get back to the way they were in the past," Conte said at a press conference.

"We are working very hard with the players and there is a great commitment, but this is not enough if we want to be competitive. We have to wait."
